VETERANS CENTER: Leader Under Fire

Former workers at the Iowa Veterans Center in Marshalltown say Commandant David Worley’s bullying management style threatened and intimidated workers and that he sexually harassed female employees. The center cares for nearly 500 veterans and their spouses and employs more than 800 workers.

“The deadline for families with a Century or Heritage applications is quickly approaching and I hope those with an eligible farm will take the time to apply,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said.  “This program is a great way to highlight the deep history and strong heritage of agriculture in our state.”

Applications for the century farm program can be found here. The Heritage application is here.

The ceremony to recognize the 2013 Century and Heritage Farms will be held at the Iowa State Fair and is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th.

CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY: Grant For Teachers

CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY: Grant For Teachers

The best teachers are often the ones trying to find creative ways to communicate their message and now one telecoms firm in the state is offering assistance with that cause.

The CenturyLink Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program, administered by the Iowa Association of School Boards, is accepting applications from teachers who want to implement technology in their classroom to increase student achievement.

“The grants recognize and reward teachers on the cutting edge of digital learning who do everything possible to create technology-rich learning experiences in their classrooms,” said Tom Downs, executive director of the Iowa Association of School Boards. “Digital fluency will be required for all students to be successful, and we are excited to be part of helping this grant program provide support to teachers who offer meaningful and creative higher-level learning opportunities for their students.”

NATIONAL AWARD: Marshalltown Library Winner

Two Iowa libraries will receive a national honor after being named as this year’s winners of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

Back in February, Marshalltown Public Library was announced as one of 33 finalists. On Tuesday, they found out that they will be one of ten to receive a $5,000 award and a medal at a celebration in Washington, D.C. on May 8th.

The library underwent a move in 2008 having been first built in the town in 1902 and serves the town's population of 27,500 made up of families that speak over 30 languages.

On Facebook, Linda Moore led the tributes, “Congratulations to everyone who works and volunteers at the MPL! Together, you make a wonderful team who serve the community so well! I always enjoy walking through your doors, into such an inviting environment.”

SCIENCE BOUND: Training STEM Students

The fields of science technology engineering and math, also known as STEM, are getting much attention as employers look for qualified candidates in those fields of study.

One program prepares young students to go into science related fields like a coach would train an athlete, starting at an early age.

Students at Hoover High School recently gathered after school for a science experiment. Teacher Christopher Sellers asked students, “What in your body uses iron?”

It wasn’t a science class or extra credit. Junior Michael Hardat explained what they were doing. He said, “Here in Iowa we’re trying to increase iron and zinc levels in corn.”
