FARM HERITAGE: Deadline Approaching For State Award

If your family has lived on your farm for over 100 or 150 years you’re entitled to state recognition. The deadline to apply for the 2013 Century and Heritage Farm Program is June 1st.

“The deadline for families with a Century or Heritage applications is quickly approaching and I hope those with an eligible farm will take the time to apply,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said.  “This program is a great way to highlight the deep history and strong heritage of agriculture in our state.”

The ceremony to recognize the 2013 Century and Heritage Farms will be held at the Iowa State Fair and is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th.

COMMUNITY GRANTS: Theisen's Program In 5th Year

Theisen’s Home-Farm-Auto is offering grants of up to $5,000 in each of its 20 locations.

It’s the fifth year of the Theisen’s More for Your Community Grants program.

Successful applicants will serve the basic needs of families and children, which include food, shelter, education, safety and health.

“This is our fifth year of More for Your Community Grants. We want to continue to encourage the important work being accomplished by the volunteers and leaders of our area nonprofits. We are proud to partner with those who directly serve children and families in our store communities,” said Company President Jim Theisen. “This year, we will increase our corporate giving and we invite nonprofit groups to complete an application online and tell us by August 31 how we can help them more effectively serve families and children.”

Theisen’s have stores in Ames, Marshalltown, Pella and Newton.

FINANCIAL CENTS: Schools Get A Lesson

Ames, Southeast Polk and Marshall High were among dozens of Iowa schools getting a lesson in sound financial management and in the process some got a little richer.  

Iowa Student Loan, in partnership with the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Jump$tart Coalition, Junior Achievement of Central Iowa and the Iowa College Access Network, offered $1,000 to schools for participating in the 2013 Iowa Financial Know-How Challenge.

It focused on increasing student understanding of student loan debt.

“For the past two years, our department has helped to support financial literacy contests for students to participate in. It has been great to observe so many enthusiastic Iowa high school students engage in these creative financial challenges,” said Mike Cormack, policy liaison for the Iowa Department of Education.

The Des Moines NAPA AutoCare Select Service Centers are offering the chance for customers to enter the Mother’s Day 2013 essay contest.

Until May 1st, a brief – up to 500 words - online essay that explains why their nominee deserves the car is all it takes.

You can nominate yourself, a friend, a neighbor, or anyone who deserves and would be in need of a used vehicle in great condition. The winner will be taking home their new prized-possession, a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville on May 10th.

ENERGY CONFERENCE: 99.9% Renewable Electricity  By 2030?

The Iowa Wind Energy Association has set the date for its 6th Annual Wind Power conference.

The Iowa Events Center will host the gathering from March 25th-27th.

With Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds already confirmed speakers, Dr. Cory Budischak will also present his team’s conclusion that 99.9% of electricity can be provided by wind, solar and new storage technologies by 2030.

The conference will focus on four general themes; technology development, small & community wind, operation & maintenance and education training & research.

Expanding from the previous year, the conference plans to have as many as 65 exhibitors and several hundred conference attendees.

YOUTH TRAINING: DOT Accepting Funding Applications

The Iowa DOT is accepting applications to give training opportunities to youths.

Private, nonprofit organizations and public agencies are eligible to a 70 percent reimbursement if accepted.

The 2013 Urban Youth Corps program hopes to provide transportation-related work projects and training opportunities to 16-21 year olds who face barriers to employment in order to accomplish meaningful and productive improvements to transportation facilities.
