SWORN IN: Court Clerk Takes Office

Marshall County swore in their latest clerk of the court Friday.

Carol Haney was sworn in by Judge James Ellefson at Marshall County Courthouse.

She replaces Kim Halverson who is Johnson County bound.

Haney comes from Story County but told the Times Republican she had hoped for a Marshalltown position to open up.

Her salary is reported to start at around $43,000.

POLICE SALE: Surplus Bikes And Equipment To Be Auctioned

The Marshalltown Police Department will be holding its annual bicycle and government surplus auction on July 15th at 6:00 p.m. 

The auction will be located at the Marshalltown Police Impound building located just east of the Marshalltown Compost at 901 Woodland Street.  In addition to bicycles there will be assorted office furniture and equipment available from various city departments for sale.  

The auction will end when all items have been sold. Eligible buyers must arrive at the time of purchase with photo identification. All sales are final and only cash and/or personal checks will be accepted.

CHILD NEGLECT: Step-Dad Arrested

A Marshalltown man accused of using a stun gun on his step-son last month was caught Wednesday.

An officer spotted 23 year old Mario Castellanos driving under suspension and pulled him over.

He’s now been charged with aggravated assault, an aggravated misdemeanor, and two counts of neglect of a dependent, a Class C felony; a punishment that could see him face up to 10 years in prison.

The Times Republican reports that the boy required medical treatment but not hospitalization after allegedly being attacked by Castellanos.  The police said it may not have been the first time either.

Castellanos is being held on a $10,000 bond and faces a preliminary hearing on April 5th.

THEFT ARRESTS: Two Charged With Robbery

Two Marshalltown men have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery from spring last year.

On April 27th, $1000 was stolen at gun point from Check into Cash. Investigators were able to recover items that linked the two recently apprehended suspects.

23-year-old Russell Gentry Jr. and 18 year old Bernard Brooks have been charged with 1st degree robbery, going armed with intent and 2nd degree theft. The first charge is a Class B felony that is punishable by up to 25 years in prison. The latter two are Class D felonies.

Gentry Jr. is being kept at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility and Brooks is being held at the Marshall County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

NIXLE REMINDER: Police Connect To Community

The Marshalltown Police Department is encouraging residents to sign up to a free program that allows them to alert the public in an efficient manner.

The Nixle Community Information Service aids the police in creating and publishing messages to be delivered to subscribed residents instantly via cell phone text message and/or email.

The scheme started in 2012 but has been put to good use recently with the latest winter storm.

THEFT CHARGE: Man Returns To Scene As Police Investigate

A man is in prison after stealing a women’s car and returning to the scene of the crime.

Police say, Jose Vazquez-Medina is an acquaintance of the victim. He gained entry in to the apartment and after the victim at first refused to give him the keys, Vazquez-Medina allegedly assaulted her. He then got the keys and left in the car.

Officers were called shortly before 10 p.m. Monday only for Vazquez-Medina to return. He was subsequently arrested.

SCHOOL ARREST: Student Charged After Threat

A Marshalltown high school student has been charged with one count of Terroristic Threats a Class D Felony.

The alleged offense occurred on January 22nd when he posted a general threat of violence on a Facebook.

Police officers contacted Marshalltown Community School District Administration Officials making them aware of the threat and subsequent investigation.
